HEALTHY WORKPLACE INITIATIVE
First Step: Clean and Disinfect
CENTRAL ILLINOIS – PEORIA/TAZEWELL/WOODFORD COUNTIES:
Mad Dog Cleaning Services in Washington today announced their new Healthy Workplace
Initiative available to businesses throughout Central Illinois. Mad Dog works with all types of
businesses including small office spaces, medical offices, car dealerships, manufacturing
facilities, retail spaces, schools, daycares, service shops and more. The first step in the
initiative is to help local businesses get back up and running with a fresh, clean and disinfected workspace…. And then continue to keep them at the same level of cleanliness with recurring services and/or educate them on maintaining their workspaces internally.
Mad Dog uses testing meters to show the quality of the air as well as what might be lurking on surfaces in the workspace. Pre and Post tests are conducted to measure the difference before and after a clean. Business owners want measurable data to be able to see the effectiveness of the clean and show they are getting their money’s worth and are realizing that a clean workplace is not just a cost, it helps generate revenue.
The ISSA, the Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association , conducts research on the Value of
Clean and has shown that properly cleaned workplaces have as much as a 46% reduction in
employee absenteeism due to illness and an 80% reduction in the probability of catching the
common cold or flu.
Up until recently, professional cleaning was one of the first budget items on the chopping block during cutbacks. Professional cleaning may be seen as a necessity after COVID-19, but
business owners still want the best bang for their buck – appropriately priced, quality cleaning, done effectively and efficiently. They want what is needed – no less and no more.
Mad Dog came under new ownership last year when Terri Peplow and her family purchased the 15+year old business. Terri and her son Jake Bowers manage the business and they are
breathing new life into the business by implementing quality control, data driven processes and tools to measure value for their customers.
Terri brought her Project Manager/Six Sigma Black Belt skills from working at Caterpillar where she specialized in process improvement and implementation projects. These skills have especially been useful during the COVID-19 outbreak when Mad Dog lost over 50% of their business overnight. Terri and her family took the opportunity to pivot and learn as much as possible about cleaning for viruses like COVID-19, bacteria, mold, etc. and how to properly disinfect and eradicate them. They took numerous training and became certified in Microbial Disinfecting from the ISSA and GBAC (Global Biorisk Advisory Council).
This knowledge led Terri and her son Jake Bowers, part owner, into the world of Healthy
Buildings and determining what part they could play in making a workplace within a facility
healthier. Proper cleaning and disinfecting is a major part of that.
In a Harvard Business Review article on What Makes an Office Building Healthy, a study of
workers found that they reported more headaches and worked 6.5% more slowly on a typing
test when they were in an office with a pollution source. The “pollution source” in question? A dirty carpet.
Mad Dog has purchased all new vacuums that are certified by the AAFA (Asthma and Allergy
Foundation of America) to be properly sealed to not blow dust particles back in the air, have
HEPA filters that trap dust particles, and have powerful suction to pull dust and dust mites out of carpets and rugs. Vacuuming is no longer about picking up crumbs and lint, it’s about getting rid of all the gunk you can’t see.
In addition to vacuums, Mad Dog uses green cleaning whenever possible – their disinfectant is peroxide based and non-toxic yet kills Coronavirus and 99.999% of most germs. Aside from the disinfectant, Mad Dog uses green certified products for their routine cleaning as well. They use special cleaning cloths for windows that only use water and do a fantastic job.
Putting these new processes into place is Terri’s specialty and rolling out the Healthy
Workspace Initiative in phases not only helps Mad Dog properly pivot and manage the changes, it also helps businesses implement these new changes in steps they can manage and afford.
Mad Dog offers flexible payment options to those businesses who want to re-open or are
currently open but are on a tight budget. Mad Dog also provides businesses with an
assessment report that includes recommendations they can do on their own to make their
spaces healthier, many of which cost very little if nothing.
The next phases of the Healthy Workspace Initiative are Improving Air Quality, Lighting, and
Office Setup. Mad Dog is forging relationships with other businesses who are experts in the
fields of HVAC, Lighting/Electricity and Office Design to partner in these areas.
The plan is to roll out each phase incrementally over the next year and Mad Dog is working with select local small businesses to beta test the rollout. They’d like to take on a couple more small businesses to help beta test so if you are interested just give them a call and ask for Terri!
